BHUBANESWAR: New escalators and four elevators or lifts will come up at Bhubaneswar railway station to help persons with disabilities, pregnant women, ill and senior citizens for comfortable visit to platforms while boarding their trains.These facilities will come up on the sides of the 6-meter wide new foot over bridge (FOB). Now the new FOB connecting 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 platforms has no escalator or elevators.Presently, escalators are available in the first FOB on Cuttack-side and lifts are available on the second FOB. As the first FOB is situated extremely left side of the entry gate of the station from Master Canteen side, normally a few people are using it. Pressure on the second FOB is very high due to its accessibility and close proximity.So, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) authorities took a decision to add these new facilities with the new and third FOB to reduce pressure on the second FOB, official sources said.Braj Mohan Agarwal, divisional railway manager of Khurda Road railway division, said the escalators will come up at a cost of around Rs 1.6 crore and lifts will be fitted in the station with an expenditure of around Rs 2 crore. “Installation of escalators will be completed by end of this year. But lifts will be fitted next year,” he added.He said the passengers like senior citizens, ill and PwD persons, can take benefit of these amenities in the station.
