Bhubaneswar: The hotel industry in the state is apprehensive of adverse impact on tourism if the government goes for mass hiring of vehicles to transport polling officials during the assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the state.Expressing concern, the hotel and restaurant association of Odisha (HRAO) has requested the government to exempt vehicles of tour operators, travel agents and hotels from being hired during the polls. “I recently wrote a letter to the development commissioner and additional chief secretary (home) Asit Kumar Tripathy and requested him to consider HRAO’s genuine concern. Domestic and foreign tourists book their tours several weeks or months in advance,” HRAO’s chairman J K Mohanty told TOI.“If vehicles of hotels, tour operators and travel agents are hired by the government for poll duties, tourists will face hardship. If tourists face inconvenience, it will affect tourism,” added Mohanty .An industry source said the HRAO’s move came from its bitter experience during 2014 elections. Since hundreds of vehicles are required to transport polling officials, police personnel and other equipment, the district collectors usually ask regional transport officers (RTOs) to hire the commercial vehicles,” a transport officer said.Tourism department said it would also ask RTOs to spare some vehicles of hotels and travel agencies for the convenience of tourists.
