Bhubaneswar: Two days after its first candidate list was released, BJD continues to lose leaders upset at being denied a chance to contest the polls.Kandhamal MP Pratyusha Rajeshwari Singh and two sitting MLAs — Debaraj Mohanty (Aska) and Purna Chandra Nayak (Daspalla) — resigned from the party on Wednesday. Mohanty and Nayak switched to BJP hours after resigning while the Kandhamal MP is currently in New Delhi. Sources said she was in touch with Congress leaders and might fight from the Nayagarh assembly segment on a Congress ticket.Pratyusha, who belongs to the Nayagarh royal family, said she was the victim of injustice and that her loyalty and dedication to the party and the people of her constituency had been overlooked. “My hard work in the districts of Kandhamal and Nayagarh has been overlooked. I have been denied a ticket to contest the elections. I have been deprived of working for and serving the people,” Pratyusha said in her resignation letter to BJD president Naveen Patnaik. She criticized senior BJD leader Bikram Keshari Arukh for his alleged role in denying her a ticket and Nayagarh MLA Arun Sahoo for harassing her with legal cases in Nayagarh. “A party that has been so vocal about women’s empowerment has failed me. My hard work and dedication have been rendered futile,” she said.Pratyusha had been elected to the Lok Sabha in a byelection in October 2014 after the seat fell vacant following the death of her husband, Hemendra Chandra Singh, who was elected in that year on a BJD ticket. The party has roped in Achyuta Samanta as Pratyusha’s replacement.The Aska and Daspalla MLAs also resigned in protest against the party’s decision to not give them tickets.
