Odisha assembly elections: BJD denies tickets to three sitting MLAs in the second list

BHUBANESWAR: The ruling BJD on Sunday denied tickets to three of its sitting MLAs as it announced the second list of candidates for nine assembly segments in Odisha . Several leaders including many sitting MLAs and MPs left the party protesting denial of tickets to them. Both the seats will go to polls in the second phase on April 18.Party sources said it will announce names for these seats on Monday as Tuesday is the last date of nomination for second phase poll.Earlier, BJD announced candidates for nine Lok Sabha and 54 assembly seats. The list includes four new faces. Lanjigarh MLA Balabhadra Majhi, Pottangi MLA Prafulla Kumar Pangi and Malkangiri MLA Manas Madkami were denied tickets.The leaders were dropped following negative reports the party has received on them, said party sources.In Lanjigarh, party roped in recent recruit Pradip Kumar Dishari while Mukudi Sodi, who rejoined the party recently, has been nominated from Malkangiri.

Pritam Padhi, who deserted Congress to join BJD got ticket from Pottangi and set to make his debut in electoral politics.Sambalpur legislator Raseswari Panigrahi, who has been picked by the party for a second term, is the lone woman candidate in the second list announced by party president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik.“We will announce names of other candidates very soon,” said Naveen.The BJD nominated royal scion Arkesh Narayan Singh Deo, a newbie in politics to take on Congress veteran and sitting MLA Narasingha Mishra in Balangir assembly segment. It would be first poll battle for Arkesh though his elder brother Kalikesh Singh Deo is BJD’s nominee for Balangir Lok Sabha seat.Even as five-time MLA and former minister Jogendra Behera had opted not to fight polls and urged the BJD leadership to consider name of his youngest son Nihar Ranjan in his place, Naveen picked new face Pradeep Behera for Loisingha, a reserved constituency for scheduled caste candidates.Prakash Chandra Mahi, a fresher in electoral politics, has replaced his elder brother and state SC/ST development minister Ramesh Majhi in Jharigam assembly segment as the minister has been nominated by the party to fight the Lok Sabha polls from Nabarangapur parliamentary constituency.BJD’s Jharsuguda district unit president and three-time MLA Kishore Kumar Mohanty will contest the forthcoming assembly poll from Brajrajnagar seat. Mohanty was given Brajrajnagar as senior leader Naba Das, who deserted Congress to join BJD in January, will fight from Jharsuguda seat on BJD ticket this time.The party retained Rairakhol MLA and deputy government chief whip Rohit Pujari for a second term from his seat.The ruling dispensation is yet to announce candidates for Biramitrapur and Phulbani assembly segments under Sundargarh and Kandhamal parliamentary segments respectively.
