By D N Singh. Relaxing the economic activities in unlock 5 is comprehensible but, when it is a question of health and safety of children, there the government of India seem to be on a haste that can be counterproductive.

Relaxing the economic activities in unlock 5 is comprehensible but, when it is a question of health and safety of children, there the government of India seem to be on a haste that can be counterproductive.

One doesn`t know the wisdom behind a decision to flung open all schools and colleges lock stock and barrell after October 15 but, there must be radically something wrong with the set of advisors to the government at the centre who, perhaps, thought that a few guidelines can be assorted as a firewall against a virus that is still unseen and undetectable.

States Should Prevail Upon

The only consolation is the rider that, the State governments are mandated with a discretion whether to do as said by the Centre or holdback at least for a month or two more before opening the schools.

The pandemic if still far from control let alone a cure. Students of tiny age groups can never be expected to adhere to the dos and undos right from five onwards upto adolescent . How many precautions can be enforced in sitting arrangements with physical distancing and many more other things when a child cannot be chained to guidelines.

Can`t Chain The Kids With A Tether

According to a study in Hopkins, in normal days a person touches his or her face at least 300 plus times be it the eyes, nose, mouth or ears. It is more than that on case of a child. Do the officials realise that it is all the more difficult to restrict a child to many such things that even no teaching fraternity can minutely ensure!

Hope that Odisha government who had certain pioneering starts against Covid, must now prevail upon and extend the literal class room teaching at least for two months i.e. till end of November 2020.

Parents Must Protest

Parents` bodies, activists, NGOs  and even doctors should come forward to urge upon the state government here not to push the millions of children into the flames of the infections .

Perhaps heaven is not going to fall if the classes go online for some more time. The union government`s attempt to reconstitute the idea of a forward thinking nation shouldn`t be built on the ashes of memories of our posterity.
