The dreams of independence appear illusive when a citizen is deprived of his fundamental rights to live the way it is destined for him.

Two and half years have passed for a man inside a Circle Jail in Odisha for an alleged leaning towards certain left ideology way back in 2016. No decision and no convictions for the so-called accused, Vinod Naik, whose consternation inside a prison cell has had such a debilitating impact on his psyche that, he suffered from paralysis which has rendered him vegetative.

His hands and legs have lost their movements to the paralytic stroke post an inevitable state when one’s nerves crash under an impact of mental depression, leaving someone immobile physically.

It has been a long time since the man still remains tucked in a dingy cell, depending on the helping hands of fellow inmates. He cannot do many things on his own except gasping for respite.

When Justice In Slumber Of Eminence!

Days and months, then years, heaping of suspicions of seditious nature, on a man who had not allowed himself into anything to do with incitement except creating awareness among people of this extremely backward area.

His brother, Manoranjan Naik, an ex headmaster of a school, who has been running from pillar to the post for last two and half years has nearly buckled down under the pressure of despair, remembering how Vinod Naik, who has been associated with the Gandhi Sevashram in Gujarat, has kept advocating for human rights and ..

It was in 2016 when Maoists made inroads into Sambalpur district’s Jujoomara area, it were both, Vinod and his brother, of Marangabahal village, who were reaching out to people just to create awareness about the rights of people. But, suddenly Vinod was picked up from his house on some implausible grounds that still remain shrouded in mystery.

Travesty Of Humanity

Neither there has been any trial nor anything in the name of legal proceeding. His disability is distinctive, his body pale and his entire being scorched by neglect. His condition keeps deteriorating so much that, he should have been under medical attention since long.

“Being poor and from a backward area was perhaps the reason why the axe fell on us”, his brother was quoted saying to an intrepid scribe of Sambalpur. Where are the human rights bodies? Or are they all in any catatonic stupor!

Even Manoranjan’s plea before the chief minister, through the district Collector, has not elicited any response so far. The jail authorities, as usual, shirk away from responsibility saying that they have kept the court posted about it.
