A senior women police officer was suspended for forcing an eight-month pregnant woman to walk for 3 km to a local police station under the scorching for not wearing a helmet as a pillion rider on a bike. The incident took place in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha on Sunday.

According to reports, one Bikram Biruli of Matkami Sahi was riding her eight-month pregnant wife to a hospital in his motorcycle en route her wife was spotted by Officer-In-Charge of Sarat Police Station Rina Baxala for not wearing a helmet as a pillion rider. The lady cop charged a Rs 1000 fine for the violation.

As per a report by TOI, Birauli requested the officer to let them go due to his inability to pay Rs 1000 fine; but OIC Baxala kept his motorcycle keys and forced the couple to walk three km towards the Sarat Police Station under the soaring summer heat, even after the couple presented the medical reports of her pregnancy.

Later in the day, she was suspended, after her inhumane behaviour was reported to senior officers “We took strong note of the unpleasant conduct of the lady police officer and promptly placed her under suspension. Despite being a woman, the police officer inflicted hardship on the visibly pregnant woman. We have also initiated departmental proceeding against the officer for misconduct and negligence of duty,” said Mayurbhanj SP Smit Parmar.
