Mob attacks police over Chaiti celebration in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district

The incident took place in Dewanbahali village in Udala under the Sarat Police station. More than 5000 people had reportedly gathered to celebrate the popular local festival.During the incident, the local mob also vandalized police vehicles.

A local mob has attacked Odisha police personnel, who went to disperse the large crowd gathered to celebrate the Chaiti festival (festival of the holy month of Chaitra) in Odisha`s Mayurbhanj, Odisha, three policemen have been injured in this incident. The police reached the spot to disperse the mob but were surrounded and attacked by the mob.

The incident took place in Dewanbahali village in Udala under the Sarat Police station. More than 5000 people had reportedly gathered to celebrate the popular local festival.
During the incident, the local mob also vandalized police vehicles.

ASI Mohapatra said, "When the police arrived on the spot it tried to prevent people from gathering at one place amid the alarming Covid-19 situation, but the crowd became uncontrollable and started vandalising our vehicles and attacking our personnel". The attack by the locals left ASI, Biswajit Das Mohapatra seriously injured. Two other police personnel were also injured in the attack.

The Odisha government on Sunday announced a 14-day lockdown in the state from May 5 to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state. The order issued by Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra said that essential services will be available on all other days except weekends. The order said that from 5 am on May 19, 2021 to May 19, 2021, there will be a lockdown in the entire state.
