Super cyclone 'Yass' to hit India's Odisha-Bengal on May 23- 24 after cyclone Tauktae, IMD issues warning

  • | Thursday | 20th May, 2021

This cyclonic storm has been named "Yass" by Oman, which may be comparable to Amphan, which caused massive havoc in Kolkata and surrounding areas around 19 May last year.

The cyclone Tauktae first wreaked havoc on the west coast of the country, and now a super cyclone is forming in the Bay of Bengal on the east coast. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about another storm. According to the Meteorological Department, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around May 22. It is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 72 hours, reaching the coasts of West Bengal-Odisha around 26 May.

The affected areas of the country have not been able to recover from the cyclone Tauktae`s catastrophe and the Meteorological Department has released the forecast of another cyclone.

The Regional Meteorological Department in Kolkata has reported that a "Super Cyclone" is expected to hit the Sunderbans region between 23 May and 25 May and possibly move towards Bangladesh. This cyclonic storm has been named "Yass" by Oman, which may be comparable to Amphan, which caused massive havoc in Kolkata and surrounding areas around 19 May last year.

Due to this, many areas of Bengal and Odisha will receive heavy rains on 23 and 24 May. Apart from this, on May 19, there may be heavy rains in many states of North India. The IMD has also raised the possibility that the storm may move towards Bangladesh after entering the land through the Sundarbans. Nevertheless, the department has already issued a warning to fishermen not to go to sea on 23 May.
