Cyclone Yaas: 14 districts in Odisha on high alert, Navy and NDRF on standby

The Odisha government has alerted 14 of the 30 districts given the Indian Meteorological Department anticipating the `Yaas` cyclone to pass through the Odisha-West Bengal coast on 26 May.

Cyclone Tauktae first wreaked havoc on the west coast of the country, and now super cyclone `Yaas` is forming in the Bay of Bengal on the east coast. The affected areas of the country have not been able to recover from the cyclone Tauktae`s catastrophe and the Meteorological Department has released the forecast of another cyclone.

The Odisha government has alerted 14 of the 30 districts given the Indian Meteorological Department anticipating the `Yaas` cyclone to pass through the Odisha-West Bengal coast on 26 May. The state government on Friday urged the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard to be prepared to deal with the situation. Odisha Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra said after a meeting with senior officials that if the cyclone `Yaas` has any impact on the state, the state government is ready to deal with any situation.

Suresh Mahapatra said that the Odisha administration is fully prepared to deal with the storm. He said, "Things will become more clear about the path of the cyclone in the next two-three days, then we will decide where to focus more. The process of identification for shelter sites and safe buildings has been started.

Jena said Indian Navy ship Chilka and Indian Navy officials have been alerted and are in touch with the state government to meet the challenges posed by the potential disaster. Jena said that 5 teams of NDRF have returned to Odisha from Gujarat till now. 17 teams of NDRF, 20 battalions of ODRAF and 100 teams of Fire Service are ready for relief and rescue operations.

The Regional Meteorological Department in Kolkata has reported that a "Super Cyclone" is expected to hit the Sunderbans region between 23 May and 25 May and possibly move towards Bangladesh. This cyclonic storm has been named "Yaas" by Oman, which may be comparable to Amphan, which caused massive havoc in Kolkata and surrounding areas around 19 May last year.
