Odisha tops in environmental goals like climate action and life underwater in SDG Index

Odisha has secured the top position in the goal-13 climate action, followed by Kerala (69), Nagaland (69), Gujarat (67), Mizoram (66), and Sikkim (65).

NITI Aayog on Thursday released the progress report of states and union territories on parameters based on economic, social and environment in the SDG India Index. In this, the state of Odisha has been on the top in the environmental criteria. Odisha has secured the top position among 6 states by securing 70 points on this list. Odisha has secured the top position in the goal-13 climate action, followed by Kerala (69), Nagaland (69), Gujarat (67), Mizoram (66), and Sikkim (65).

The SDG Index Score for Goal 13 has a target set between 16 and 70 for states and 18 to 77 for union territories. Odisha tops the list of states, while Andaman and Nicobar tops the list of union territories. Six states and three union territories secured a position in the front runner category (both scores range between 65 and 99).

Odisha secured the top spot in the country in categories like climate and life below water; however, it is the bottom state in peace, justice and strong institutions.

This report accessed the performance of 36 states and union territories on 17 targets. If we talk about the top five performing states, Kerala is first, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at number two, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Uttarakhand at number three, Sikkim at number four and Maharashtra at number five. Kerala was also ranked first in the 2019 rankings.

The index was launched in December 2018 and has become a key tool for monitoring progress on SDGs in the country. In the first edition 2018-19, 13 goals, 39 targets and 62 indicators were included, whereas in this third edition 17 goals, 70 goals and 115 indicators were included.
