Odisha Police, in its new initiative, has sought applications from people of the transgender community for recruitment to the posts of constable and sub-inspector.

Odisha government has taken a landmark decision for the LGBTIQ (transgender) community.

Odisha Police, in its new initiative, has sought applications from people of the transgender community for recruitment to the posts of constable and sub-inspector.

Odisha Police Recruitment Board has invited applications for 477 posts of Sub-Inspector and 244 constable posts on Saturday.

The application portal will stay open between June 22 to July 15.

The Third Gender Mahasangh has welcomed this decision of the state government. Odisha Kinnar Sangh has expressed their gratitude towards Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Pratap Kumar Sahu, founder president of the federation said, “For the first time, a public advertisement has been issued in the state seeking applications from transgender people for government jobs. The inclusion of transgender people in the police force will not only increase the confidence of the community but will also change the perception of society towards transgender people.

Speaking to reporters in Cuttack, Director General of Police Abhay said, “I invite eligible women and men to join Odisha Police as Constable (Communication) and Sub-Inspector (SI) to serve the people of the state; also for the first time people from the transgender community can apply for both the posts.”

However, people with disabilities will not be eligible to apply. The notification seeking applications said, Transgender candidates are eligible to apply, PWD (Persons with Disabilities) are not eligible to apply.
