A 57 -year-old ASHA worker in Odisha passed the class 10th exam this year after failing the matriculation mark several times.

The success story of Swarnalata Pati, a resident of Kanti Gaan village of Bhandaripokhari block of Bhadrak, has become an example for other women of the village. Due to the poor financial condition of the house, Swarnalata`s studies could not be completed.

Swarnalata Pati studied till the seventh standard and initially worked as a cook in the village school. She was then performing her duties as a single mother after losing her husband at the age of 27.

Despite being deprived of his schooling, she worked hard to educate his children up to the post-graduate level.

Later in 2005, Swarnalata Pati was appointed as an ASHA worker but in 2019, the government announced that it is mandatory for ASHA workers to pass class 10th exam.

Swarnalata did not give up and decided to appear in the matriculation examination. Swarnalata, who studied at night after a day`s work, filled the matriculation form from the State Open School in December 2019. The exam was to be held in March 2020 but due to Covid-19 infection, the exam was cancelled.

Later in September, she gave the test from Odisha State Open School but she failed again, then she also gave her matriculation examination from Bagurai High School but she failed in English subject by 4 marks. This year the government again cancelled the matriculation examination due to the Covid-19 epidemic and the result was announced based on students` internal assessment.

Fortunately, Swarnalata had passed the mid-term examination in December which helped her in passing the exam this year.
