Smrutirekha Behera, a school teacher in Odisha`s Bhubaneswar has started driving Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation`s garbage collection vehicle after she lost her job due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Smrutirekha Behera of Bhubaneshwar lives in the Pathabandha slum area with her husband, two daughters and mother-in-law. She used to teach in a nursery school. Her life was normal before the Covid-19 outbreak but it turned upside down after the Covid lockdown. All the offline classes in her school were closed. Even the work of teaching tuition in homes stopped.

While narrating her ordeal, Smrutirekha said - "I have two daughters, we could not even feed them properly during the epidemic. I borrowed money from others for the family`s food, but this could not last long. Due to the pandemic, I had to face the worst days of my life. After the pandemic, home tuition was my second source of income, but that too was denied. I was forced to do so as there was no other option left to earn. My husband didn`t even get his salary. Because of this, we had to get more upset."

To fight hunger and unemployment, teacher Smrutirekha Behera decided to take up the job of a garbage truck driver in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. She works every day from five in the morning to one in the afternoon. The garbage has to be picked up from the city and thrown at the dumping ground.
