Supreme court denies Rath yatra across Odisha, allows only at Puri Jagannath temple

The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the plea seeking to take out the Jagannath Rath Yatra at places other than Puri in Odisha. Along with this, the court also dismissed the petitions challenging the order of the Odisha government in this matter.

The Odisha government has allowed Rath Yatra only in Puri and asked all other Jagannath temples to perform rituals in the premises. The Supreme Court has approved the decision of the government. The court said that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic permission for the Rath Yatra cannot be given.

The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the plea seeking to take out the Jagannath Rath Yatra at places other than Puri in Odisha. Along with this, the court also dismissed the petitions challenging the order of the Odisha government in this matter. The name of the lawyer who filed the petition is Vishnu Shankar Jain.

The Chief Justice told the petitioners that you can offer God`s prayer from home. The conditions are not such that you go to Odisha and pray. He said that he is hopeful that the Lord will allow everyone to participate in the Rath Yatra next year. The Chief Justice said that he also felt bad but he could not help it. They also want to have darshan of God but the situation is not like this yet. The Rath yatra will start on July 12 this year.

Earlier on Saturday, the Odisha government said that this year`s annual Rath Yatra festival will be held without crowds of devotees and they will not be allowed to watch the rath yatra from rooftops.

A curfew would be imposed in Puri city a day before the festival on July 12 which would be in effect till noon the next day.
