In a first, Odisha to provide filtered drinking water from taps in Puri

People no longer need to store drinking water in a filter. People have such facilities only in a few selected cities of the world. The Odisha government says that this project will benefit the local people of Puri as well as about 20 million tourists.

Now 24 hours of drinking water will be available from the government tap in Puri, Odisha. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday virtually inaugurated the `Drink from Tap` project. This project has been started under Sujal Mission. In an official statement, he said that Puri is the first city in the country to implement the Drink-from-Tap project.

Drinking water fountains have been installed at various places in the city so that no traveller has to buy or carry bottled water. This will reduce the use of 30 million plastic bottles annually in Puri, that is, 400 metric tonnes of waste will be reduced. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that with its new achievement, Puri has now joined the league of cities like New York, London, Singapore and Tokyo.

He has said that by March 2022, this facility will be available to 40 lakh population in 15 other cities including Cuttack, Rourkela, Khurda Jatni, Berhampur. The government will spend Rs 1300 crore on the Sujal (drinking water from tap) mission. The Chief Minister further said, `Today has been added as a new chapter in the history of the development of Odisha.
