BHUBANESWAR: Parents expressed displeasure and concern over the decision of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to scrap its international curriculum CBSE-I from the coming academic session.DAV Public School, Pokhariput in the city was the only school in Odisha amongst the 54 schools selected to impart the international curriculum of CBSE in the country. As many as 100 students were studying in the course launched in 2013. Happy over the outcomes of the course both parents and schools are planning to write to the CBSE not to scrap the curriculum."Suddenly we got a circular from the CBSE chairman about discontinuing the CBSE-I curriculum from 2017-18 academic session because the board do not get the resources they expected to get. Students studying in CBSE-I would be accommodated in the general CBSE board. The board did not give any cushion time or hint about the wrapping up," said principal of the school, Sujata.Sources said, schools opted for the special curriculum had deposited an amount and also developed special infrastructure like smart boards, extra books, teaching learning materials and invested in teachers' training. The course was quite popular among students of elite backgrounds because it was less expensive compared to other international courses offered."The curriculum was different from what general CBSE teaches. The teaching process is completely activity based and in interactive mode. Parents are really happy with the teaching process and wanted it to continue. All 54 schools offering the international curriculum have planned to write to the board requesting not to do away with it," said Sujata. The schools have also been asked to construct a separate block for CBSE-I and the block in DAV, Pokhariput is about to finish. Besides, children got exposure to visual arts, computers, dance and music, which was not offered to beginners or in primary classes."This is not done. The CBSE must not experiment with children and the education system. When children will be asked to go to general board again they may not face any problem in coping with the studies but it will have an impact on them," said Bandita Das, a parent, whose daughter is in class III. She said, parents of all CBSE-I schools in India have planned to submit a memorandum to the ministry of HRD requesting to continue with the curriculum."In this age of globalisation it is required for children to get exposure to global standards and it is the duty of the government to provide curriculum at par with other international boards. Pilot projects are started with high possibility of success but this is really strange that it failed," said M K Mohapatra, another parent.
