Graffiti at railway stations to showcase culture

"We got an overwhelming response after painting the walls of the Bhubaneswar railway station and parts of Sambalpur and Visakhapatnam stations. BHUBANESWAR: Passengers and railway users can see beautiful wall paintings and graffiti on local culture and tradition at four major stations of the East Coast Railway (ECoR).Cuttack, Puri and Berhampur in Odisha along with Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh will now have the building walls of stations and boundary walls in railway areas painted by local artists and art college students.ECoR has already applied this idea at the Bhubaneswar railway station. "If we get proposals from other stations, especially Rayagada, Koraput, Jagadalpur and Srikakulam, which are rich centres of art and culture, we will definitely look into them," said Mishra. A large number of artists and students had taken part in the process. The themes of the wall paintings will reflect local tales, parables, customs and folklore, he added.

The boundary walls of the station on the side of platform number 6 are painted with pictures based on themes of culture, social welfareand art.It had roped in a city-based NGO and art colleges for painting the walls. A large number of artists and students had taken part in the process."We got an overwhelming response after painting the walls of the Bhubaneswar railway station and parts of Sambalpur and Visakhapatnam stations. Encouraged by the appreciation of these efforts, we are planning to take up the beautification of more number of stations," said ECoR's chief public relations officer J P Mishra.Railway sources said the beautification process at the four stations will happen on the lines of the Bhubaneswar railway station.Mishra said residents, NGOs, women groups, local artists and students would be involved in the exercise. The themes of the wall paintings will reflect local tales, parables, customs and folklore, he added."If we get proposals from other stations, especially Rayagada, Koraput, Jagadalpur and Srikakulam, which are rich centres of art and culture, we will definitely look into them," said Mishra.
