Mentally challenged sisters killed as house catches fire in Odisha's Angul

After inhaling the smoke, both the sisters could not decide what to do and fell unconscious. Angul collector Anil Kumar Samal has sanctioned Rs 10,000 to the next of kin of the deceased. When we rescued them, they were not responding to our call," said a neighbor.The fire brigade and police reached the spot and extinguished the fire immediately.

BHUBANESWAR: Two mentally challenged sisters died of asphyxiation after their house caught fire in Bantala Bazaar of Angul district on Thursday morning even as household articles were gutted in the fire.Bimala Gahana (46) and Ujjala Gahana (44) - both unmarried - from Bantala Bazaar, around 20 km from Angul town, were staying together in an asbestos house built by their parentsPolice sources said the duo was engaged in conversation till 10pm in the night. They might have forgotten to douse a kerosene lamp. "Though the actual reason is yet to be ascertained, we suspect the lamp to be the cause behind break-out of fire," said Bantala police station inspector in charge of Nirmala Gochhayat.After noticing the smoke billowing out of the house, the neighbours rushed to the spot and broke open the door. They rescued the sisters and admitted them into a local hospital where the doctors declared them dead."The flame of the lamp first came in contact with a cloth and broke out in the house.
