The duo raised 71 runs for the first wicket before their partnership was broken by Akshay Kalokhe. Punjab ended the first day on 338/6.

COOCH BEHAR TROPHY Chandigarh, January 11 A fine batting performance from Punjab’s batsmen put the side on the front foot against Maharashtra on the opening day of their quarterfinal match of the Cooch Behar U-19 Trophy at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala today. Punjab ended the first day on 338/6. Electing to bat first, Punjab openers Jagmeet Singh and Arjun Verma started off good. The duo raised 71 runs for the first wicket before their partnership was broken by Akshay Kalokhe. Verma was cleaned on 14 off 50 balls. Nehal Wadhera came in and raised a solid partnership with Jagmeet. The duo raised a 63-run partnership for the second wicket. But Kalokhe again came to the rescue of the visitors as he claimed Wadhera on 28 off 65 balls, studded with four boundaries. At 134/2, Prabhsimran Singh joined Jagmeet but could only add seven runs to their total. He fell to Siddhesh Warghante. Desperately looking for a partnership, Gourav Choudhary joined Jagmeet but their partnership got only 23 runs. Jagmeet was the fourth batsman to go after being cleaned by Kalokhe as the team total read 164. He posted 85 off 149 balls, including 11 boundaries and two sixes. In-form Choudhary was joined by Deepin Chitkara and the duo provided some relief for the host side. The duo was involved in a 68-run partnership to push the total to 232 before Chitkara (43 off 43, studded with five boundaries and a six) was bowled by Tanmay Shirode. His departure brought in Jaish Jain, who added 87 runs for the sixth wicket with Choudhary. Kalokhe took the charge and once again proved his worth after claiming Jain (41 off 85 balls, studded with two boundaries and a six). Meanwhile, Choudhary stood tall at one end as he came close to his century. At the end of the day, he was unbeaten on 92 off 193 balls, including 13 boundaries. He had Rahul Kashyap (8) batting alongside. The duo closed the day for Punjab at 338. For Maharatsra, Kalokhe was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 4/88, while Shirode and Warghante claimed a wicket each.
