CHANDIGARH: The non-utilization of resources, no accountability for poor results , lack of dedication and lack of leadership qualities among various heads and principals besides no detention policy and vacant posts are some of the reasons behind government school students not being able to give their best in exams as stated by city-based educationists.TOI reported about Class X students of government schools not being able to perform well in National Achievement Survey ( NAS ) after a poor show in Class X boards.The experts who have been involved with government schools for trainings and surveys shared that the students are taught in Hindi while the question paper is set in English which makes it difficult for the students to interpret the questions.Surender Dahiya, director state council of educational research and training (SCERT), said, “The NAS survey result shows that the government schools are not using the various resources provided to them by NCERT and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). If given practical knowledge, students will be able to grasp the concepts in a better manner. School heads must ensure proper utilization of the resources by motivating teachers.”It was added that a mechanism by department to hold teachers and heads accountable for the results will also help. “No detention policy till Class VIII, poor attendance of students. lack of accountability, lack of facilities as compared to private schools, grace marks policy, and shortage of qualified teachers in some schools are few of the reasons behind the poor performance of the students. Latest technology for imparting education, introducing vocational subjects, giving performance based incentives are some of the ways in which performance of the students can improve,” said Jasdeep Kalra, director AKSIPS schools.“There should be an independent body that sets standards for government and private schools. Government schools are never checked by CBSE. No detention exists for private schools as well but the teachers are accountable at all levels,” said Robin Aggarwal, director, Learning Paths School MohaliEducation department honoured Isha Rawat, a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 37 B who topped governments schools with 98.6% marks. Department will soon be honouring all its meritorious students.UT has grabbed the second position among all the UTs in NAS. However, 75% to 85% Class X students scored less than 50% marks in mathematics, science, social science and English.
