MOHALI: A cooked-up hit-and-run tale enabled the carjacking on the Kharar-Banur road that ended in an encounter near Naina Devi in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday.Mohali resident Navneet Kumar said the accused had signalled them to stop their Hyundai Verna car after claiming they had hit a person and were fleeing. The moment Navneet Kumar and his brother-in-law Ritu Raj alighted, one of the five accused occupied the driver’s seat and drove away their car after firing in the air. Naveent told TOI that they did not resist the robbery as the accused had threatened to kill them if they did not step back.“I had picked up my brother-in-law from bus stand around 10.40 pm. We planned to have dinner out, but did not find any shop open in Kharar. We then decided to try our luck near Landran. So, we turned back and headed towards Landran on Kharar-Banur road. As we crossed the Landran T-point, a person driving a car adjacent to us signalled us to stop around 11.10 pm,” Kumar said. “Thinking some college students might be asking for help, we stopped and lowered the window. One of the youths told us that we have hit someone on the way and are trying to escape. We came out of the car and as we were arguing with the man, two youths sat on the front seats of our car. One of them fired a shot in the air and drove away.”Navneet said the entire incident lasted for less than five minutes. The carjackers fled towards Banur side. He said he immediately called up Mohali police and a team of 10 to 12 police officials reached the spot within 10 minutes.
