Man sentenced to 10-year jail in drug case

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh district court sentenced one person to 10-year jail in a case registered under the NDPS Act. One of the family members insisted on going to jail with the convict. Kala, 37, a resident of Sector 56, also has to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.When the court pronounced the sentence, family members of the accused created a ruckus outside the courtroom. The court convicted the accused, identified as Kala, for possessing 44 banned injections.

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh district court sentenced one person to 10-year jail in a case registered under the NDPS Act. The court convicted the accused, identified as Kala, for possessing 44 banned injections. Kala, 37, a resident of Sector 56, also has to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.When the court pronounced the sentence, family members of the accused created a ruckus outside the courtroom. Eventually, police had to be called. A huge crowd gathered by the time police arrived.Kala was arrested on January 23, 2017. As per the complaint, Palsora police set up a mobile checkpost behind the Sector 56 government school. At around 8pm, a youth carrying a red polybag was seen coming from the direction of the road dividing sectors 55 and 56. On seeing the police party, he acted in a suspicious manner, turned back and started walking fast. At this, police stopped him and checked his polybag. They found 44 injections from his possession, 22 of Buprenorphine and the rest of Pheniramine Maleate. Kala could not produce a valid license or permit for the contraband and was arrested. He was booked under Section 22 of the NDPS Act. After trial, the court convicted him and sent him to jail for 10 years.After the judge pronounced the order, family members of the convict created a hue and cry.The crowd, comprising mainly of women and children, started shouting. They maintained that Kala had been framed and should be acquitted. One of the family members insisted on going to jail with the convict.
