No butchery to operate within 1,000m radius of airport: Deputy commissioner

Action will be taken once the approval is received from the government.On July 12, Mohali deputy commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra had constituted two teams to investigate illegal activity in the area. The orders will remain enforced till September 19, 2018, she said.Sapra said, “After taking stock of the situation around the airport, ADC has been submitted his report. We had received complaints from the airforce and airport authorities regarding the intrusion of carnivorous birds like eagles during landing of the aircraft posing major threats. The action came after airport authorities have approached the Mohali administration asking to remove illegal construction, butcheries and garbage dumps posing major threat to the flights approaching for landing at the airport. Two teams were constituted under ADC to look into the matter after which a report has been submitted.

MOHALI: A number of illegal butcheries and other constructions have cropped in the vicinity of the international airport , showed a report submitted by the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Charandev Singh Mann after inspection of the area.On submission of the report, deputy commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra has issued orders to ban the operations of butcheries within the radius of 1,000 metres from the airport on Mohali side. The orders will remain enforced till September 19, 2018, she said.Sapra said, “After taking stock of the situation around the airport, ADC has been submitted his report. We had received complaints from the airforce and airport authorities regarding the intrusion of carnivorous birds like eagles during landing of the aircraft posing major threats. Two teams were constituted under ADC to look into the matter after which a report has been submitted. The report will further be sent to the additional chief secretary, Punjab government, to take further action. As of now, we have banned the operations of butcheries operating within 1,000 metres of the radius from the airport.”She said that it has also been observed that illegal constructions are also mushrooming in the vicinity, in violation of the building byelaws. The airport officials told that last year two aircraft sustained bird hits while approaching for landings and fortunately pilots managed to land them safely. One of the aircraft also got damaged in the process.Illegal butcheries and huge garbage dumps in Jagatpura village attract eagles and other birds, which keep on coming in the way of aircraft taking off from or landing on the airport runway.During the hearing of the case before high court, IAF authorities expressed concerned over butcheries cropping up near the airport. They also mentioned about the haphazard constructions going on in its vicinity. The counsel for the Central government told the bench that unregulated construction may obstruct the free flow of drainage and the water may gather on runway during rainy season. The bench observed that it is a serious issue and fixed July 23 as the date for hearing.
