CHANDIGARH: The Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (Foswac) has asked senior superintendent of police (SSP) Nilambari Vijay Jagdale to revive the old beat box system of checking up on senior citizens living alone.Foswac handed the SSP a memorandum on Saturday to seek help in controlling crime. They made several suggestions to Jagdale. Recalling the old system, residents described how police used to visit the houses of senior citizens who lived alone, just to check if they were alright and feeling safe. Police motivated even neighbours to check up on these senior citizens and keep the cops informed in case they were ailing or in trouble.During a visit to several sectors where this scheme was launched and beat boxes installed near the markets, TOI gathered from the residents that most of the times, the beat boxes were found shut and that no cop was available to register their complaints or take any action on those.Foswac president Baljinder Singh Bittu said: “About 10 years ago, cops from the beat box used to visit senior citizens to make them feel safe. There was a system of regular interaction with the RWAs (resident welfare associations) and the area SHO (station house officer), in which residents could raise security-related issues, which the cops then resolved. It seems the police department is more focused on paperwork now than fieldwork, due to which perhaps this model was shelved.”Sector-15 RWA president Ravi Sharma said: “Even for reporting petty issues related to crime, the representatives of our RWA have to visit the police station. These matters can easily be resolved on the spot at monthly meetings. SSP Nilambari Vijay Jagdale promised to hold a meeting every three months to interact with members of the RWAs and look into their issues. She asked the beat staff to increase their activity and presence around the homes of seinior citizens to keep a watch on theire house3s and ensure their protection.
