ATM fraud: Senior citizen conned over phone

PANCHKULA: ATM hackers withdrew Rs 18,000 from the account of a senior citizen on Thursday here a day after her visiting the bank for a new ATM card.Urmila Devi, 62, of Sector 15 took her complaint to the office of the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) and stated that because of a technical fault in her old ATM card, she had visited her State Bank of India branch in Sector 15 to apply for a new card. A day later, she received a call from someone claiming to be from her bank. The caller wanted her ATM card details over the mobile phone.She took it to be follow-up call from the bank regarding her complaint and passed on the details along with the OTP (one-time password) received on her mobile phone. The caller used the code to withdraw Rs 18,000 from her bank account within minutes.Later, the woman informed cops, who registered a case under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector 14 police station. Assistant sub-inspector Harender Singh said: "We started the investigation soon after getting the complaint. We suspect the involvement of some employee of the bank, who could have leaked the information about the elderly woman."The government indicated in July that nearly a quarter of the ATMs run by public sector banks may be vulnerable to frauds as 74% of the cash dispensers are running on outdated software. The statement came in response to a question in Parliament.
