Rs 20 lakh penalty on 11 hotels, 9 liquor vends

CHANDIGARH : The UT excise and taxation department has slapped a penalty of Rs 20 lakh on 11 hotels and nine liquor vends (Rs 1 lakh each) for violating UT excise policy 2018-19.Besides, one hotel was serving liquor to youths below the age of 25 years. Meanwhile, one liquor vend was fined as the vend was found opened before 9 am.Rakesh Kumar Popli, additional excise and taxation commissioner-cum-Collector, said orders regarding penalty were issued on Tuesday. This is the first case of this year where the UT excise and taxation department had slapped apenalty of Rs 1lakh to a hotel for serving liquor to youngsters below the age of 25 years.In addition, seven liquor vends were fined as liquor stock was lying at the vend premises without hologram. The hearing in nine other cases is also going on, he added. The hotels, which were issued notices for offering “1 plus 1” and “2 plus 2” offers on drinks and underage drinking, in their reply had stated that that they were unaware of the rules.As per Section 23 of the Punjab Excise Act, 1915, the legal age of consuming liquor in Chandigarh is 25 years.Presently, a majority of the hotels, restaurants and bars in the city do not ask youngsters about their age before serving them liquor.
