CHANDIGARH: A recent report of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) appointed committee has revealed that municipal solid waste is not being processed properly in Chandigarh.Confirming the development, Chandigarh municipal commissioner KK Yadav said that committee of NGT, in which there are representatives of pollution control committee and Chandigarh MC, in its recent report, submitted that still unprocessed waste going directly to dumping grounds and waste is not being processed properly.Keeping in mind the report and recent Supreme Court directions on municipal solid waste, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has decided to segregate household waste at source. When the committee members had visited the plant on October 24 and 25 (2017), the compost plant was not working. The tribunal had further issued directions to the MC to utilise Rs 5 lakh of the Rs 10.5 lakh environmental compensation (penalty levied on the firm for not processing complete waste) for segregation of waste at source and refund the remaining Rs 5.5 lakh to the firm.In its last year's report, the NGT-appointed committee had stated that the plant is processing only 150 to 200 MT waste daily. The initiatives like notifying solid waste management policy, regulating door-to-door collection garbage are also part of steps for improving city’s overall ranking in sanitary surveys, he added.Last year, the NGT had directed the Jaypee Group to run its waste processing plant in Dadu Majra at optimum capacity (550 metric tonnes a day). The NGT had also ordered the civic body to start segregation at source as it was important to run the compost plant. The company was also told to operate the compost plant fully, and not on trial basis.
