CHANDIGARH: Two men on a Honda Activa scooter snatched a purse from a woman near a petrol pump in Sector 7 on Friday morning, taking the total number of snatchings to 16 in 21 days of this month.Surabhi Maan, a resident of Sector 8, said she was had gone to an ATM kiosk in Sector 7 around 7 am. After withdrawing cash, she was returning home. As she reached near the petrol pump, two miscreants riding a white colour scooter approached her and the pillion rider snatched her purse. She said her purse contained Rs 2,000 and important documents. She informed her father, who told police about the crime. Snatchers were without helmetsCops from Sector 26 police station reached the spot and put up nakas in the area, but failed to catch the accused.In her complaint, Surabhi said both the accused were not wearing helmets and in their mid-twenties. Police said she has been pursuing law from a private university in Mohali . Police recorded her statement and registered a case under Sections 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft) and 379 (punishment for theft) of the IPC against unknown persons and started probe. Police have collected CCTV footage of the petrol pump and nearby houses to identify the accused.Notably, in the last three days, three cases of snatchings have been reported from the jurisdiction of Sector 26 police station only. Four snatchings were committed by occupants of Activa scooter in the recent past.
