CHANDIGARH:Some of Tricity’s influential businessmen, bureaucrats and academicians will soon come together to form a unique task force that works towards giving the region the identity of being the ‘innovation capital’ of the North. This was decided at a roundtable discussion that TOI organised in collaboration with the Indian School of Business ( ISB ) recently. It saw some of the best minds of the region thrash out what it means to be an innovation hub and how this task can be achieved. This new initiative is being organized under TOI’s ongoingcampaign ‘It’s Chandigarh’s Time’. In January, we had put the spotlight on Mohali’s IT industry and then in July we had organised a conclave with Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Punjab governor and UT administrator V P Singh Badnore on how the Tricity can be seen as one unit to improve the overall appeal of the region for investors. The latest discussion on innovation only takes this debate forward. Already, with its high quality of life and healthy infrastructure , the Tricity has emerged as a preferred destination for setting up startups. There are around 100 startups operating in Chandigarh and Mohali alone, according todata collated from government sources. If industry can join hands with academia and the governments of the region, the Tricity can take the lead in using knowledge as a driver of growth. At the roundtable, organised on the ISB campus, entrepreneurs raised a number of issues being faced by startups in the region. Outlining the importance of the task force, J M Balamurugan, secretary to Punjab governor, said a key reason for many startups failing is their inability to get connected with the government. The idea of forming the task force came from Sofi Zahoor of QuarkXPress Publishing R&D India Private Limited, who is also chairman of CII, Chandigarh. He said the task force will go a long way in developing the region as an innovation hub.
