CHANDIGARH: Giving some respite to residents who were issued notices by the Zirakpur municipal council for demolition of their buildings erected in the restricted zone near the IAF station in Chandigarh, the Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday clarified that it never ordered demolition. The court further added that it had only asked for taking action against the illegal structures in accordance with law.“Apparently, the orders were misinterpreted and demolition drive launched by the local body in Pabhat village in Zirakpur. A division bench comprising the Chief Justice and Justice Arun Palli also directed the Zirakpur MC to examine the replies received from the residents in response to notices issued for demolition of structures.The local authorities have also been told to issue fresh notices to other residents who have raised buildings in the restricted zone and take a decision in accordance with law, after examining their replies.Further directing the authorities to submit a status report regarding the structures demolished by the authorities, the division bench made it clear that officials responsible for demolishing the buildings unlawfully shall have to compensate the loss from their own pocket.
