Shot fired over playing songs on phone at tavern

MOHALI: A 42-year-old man had a narrow escape when a rift over playing music led to gun violence at a tavern here in Baltana on Thursday night. Sanjiv and his friend, identified as Amit, a resident of Sector 9, Panchkula , were sitting together when Amit started playing songs on his mobile phone after finishing a bottle of liquor. The bullet grazed the victim, leaving him injured.The victim has been identified as Sanjiv Kumar of Ram Darbar, Chandigarh. Both the groups had an argument and the tavern management separated them.“The accused also argued with the staff. The second group asked Amit to stop the music, but he refused, said sources.

Two of the accused are Naveen Kumar and Raman while the third is yet to be identified.It all started around 11pm when two groups were drinking at separate tables. Sanjiv and his friend, identified as Amit, a resident of Sector 9, Panchkula , were sitting together when Amit started playing songs on his mobile phone after finishing a bottle of liquor. The second group asked Amit to stop the music, but he refused, said sources. Both the groups had an argument and the tavern management separated them.“The accused also argued with the staff. They asked them to keep the tavern open after permissible time limit of 11pm, threatening them with a gun,” said sources.Sanjeev, in his statement to police, said Amit left the tavern around 11.30pm and he was drinking alone. Naveen came up to him and caught him from the collar of his shirt. The unidentified person then fired at him, but the bullet just brushed past him. All the accused then left. A tavern staffer called up the police. A police control room team took Sanjeev to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula.Sub-inspector Satinder Singh, in-charge of Baltana police post, said they have registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 25 of the Arms Act at the Zirakpur police station. No arrests have been made so far.
