Chandigarh: Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Congress laud 1984 sentences

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, in a written statement, welcomed the verdict and stated that it was “long overdue”. The Chief Minister has expressed the hope that others involved in the attacks would also soon be brought to book for their horrendous and inhuman acts. Punjab Congress on Tuesday welcomed the first death sentence by a Delhi court in the 1984 riots case. Had they wanted they could have got the investigation expedited.”“But as long as justice is done, we welcome it,” he said.

Punjab Congress on Tuesday welcomed the first death sentence by a Delhi court in the 1984 riots case. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, in a written statement, welcomed the verdict and stated that it was “long overdue”. “Justice has finally been meted out to the perpetrators of the heinous crimes. It has taken more than 30 years for the court to deliver justice in this case,” said the statement quoting the CM adding that he hoped that the other cases would also soon be settled by the judiciary. “The riot cases, which left a deep scar on the national consciousness, need to be expedited and taken to their logical conclusion at the earliest,” Amarinder, who had personally visited the refugee camps to help the victims in the aftermath of the unprecedented riots. Advertising Punjab Pradesh Congress committee chief Sunil Jakhar too welcomed the judgment and said, “They got what they deserved. I hope the remaining culprits, whosoever they are, will get the similar punishment.” On the delay, Jakhar hit out at SAD and BJP and said, “SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal did not do anything to get the investigations expedited by Special Investigation Team (SIT). Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal is a Union Minister. Had they wanted they could have got the investigation expedited.” “But as long as justice is done, we welcome it,” he said. Senior Cabinet Minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa said he was relieved that justice was finally delivered to the victims, many of whom not only lost their lives but several others who were displaced. On whether he demanded the same for several Congress leaders, who were also accused of the riots, Bajwa said, “If the court finds them guilty, they should be punished.”
