In death, youth gives life to 2 kidney patients

"It was extremely tough to say yes to organ donation. CHANDIGARH: Rohit Kumar, 29, a resident of Sector 56, gifted new life to two persons after his death, donating his kidneys to them. "In fact, organ donation affirmed for us that saying no would have been denying other people the chance for life and making their families undergo the same unbearable pain of losing their dear one which we are confronted with. So, we had to say yes to organ donation," said Harnek.Rohit was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, after he fell down from his motorcycle when it veered off the road. Over the last four days, the recipients have recovered from surgery and the transplanted kidneys are expected to recover their function in due course of time."

We were going back and forth on our decision but finally, we felt that it was the right thing to do," said Harnek Singh, the father of Rohit. "In fact, organ donation affirmed for us that saying no would have been denying other people the chance for life and making their families undergo the same unbearable pain of losing their dear one which we are confronted with. Who would know more than us what it means? So, we had to say yes to organ donation," said Harnek.Rohit was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, after he fell down from his motorcycle when it veered off the road. He was admitted to PGI in a critical condition.Rohit's condition worsened in the following days. He was declared brain dead on December 7 evening. With his father agreeing to the proposal of organ donation, the departments started reaching out to the matching recipient.Finally, the cross match of several potential recipients led to the identification of best matching recipients for the two kidneys and the transplant of both the kidneys was accomplished the next day of the declaration of brain death Prof Ashish Sharma, head, department of renal transplant surgery, PGI said: "In this case, the donor's kidneys were not functioning well at the time of death but these kidneys mostly recover in recipients in about 3-4 weeks. Over the last four days, the recipients have recovered from surgery and the transplanted kidneys are expected to recover their function in due course of time."
