Mohali cops seize 36,000 litres of liquor in 2018

MOHALI: The city police this year have registered around 230 cases under of the Excise Act and seized 36,000 litres of liquor. "To end this illegal trade, excise and taxation departments of Chandigarh and Punjab need to make a common excise police," he added. "In most of these cases, the liquor was meant for sale in Chandigarh only. "This is because the Punjab government has decreased the liquor quota and increase prices," the official said. The accused were trying to smuggle the liquor to Cholta Khurad village in Mohali.As per the official record of Mohali police, they have seized around 23,636 litres of foreign-made liquor and around 13,455 litres country-made liquor this year.

According to the official of the Mohali police, low prices of liquor in Chandigarh allures smuggler as they buy from the UT and then sell the same in Punjab.The district police has recently seized a truck with 231 cases of illegal liquor. The liquor was being taken to Punjab illegally. The truck was loaded from a Sector 31-based wine shop.On Wednesday too, the excise and taxation department confiscated 40 cases of Chandigarh-made liquor from cabs and arrested three persons in this regard. The accused were trying to smuggle the liquor to Cholta Khurad village in Mohali.As per the official record of Mohali police, they have seized around 23,636 litres of foreign-made liquor and around 13,455 litres country-made liquor this year."In most of these cases, the liquor was meant for sale in Chandigarh only. The accused used to buy liquor and then transport the same to Punjab," an official said.According to sources in the department, the excise and taxation department seized around 340 cases of illegal liquor in December till date.The assistant excise and taxation commissioner (AETC), Parmjit Singh said that the illegal trade of smuggling liquor to Punjab from Chandigarh has gone up from last eight months. "This is because the Punjab government has decreased the liquor quota and increase prices," the official said."To end this illegal trade, excise and taxation departments of Chandigarh and Punjab need to make a common excise police," he added.
