CHANDIGARH: Despite notice from the UT administration, online taxi service Uber continues to harass customers by forcing them to maintain minimum Paytm balance of Rs 350. This was highlighted before members of the state commission for redress of consumer complaints on National Consumer Day at a recent event. On Tuesday, when TOI tried to test the same it was found that Uber was still refusing rides to customers by not accepting payments by those who had not maintained less balance. It said insufficient balance when the balance was around Rs 250.The UT administration had written to Uber, asking them “to stop the practice to avoid inconvenience to the public”. This was after a complaint was made in this regard, stating that seeking deposit from those who make digital payments was something like an offence and a big blow to the India vision of digital payments. “Also, we are suffering financial losses and need immediate attention as it is a pan-India matter,” the complainant had stated in the complaint to the PMO.Advocate Ajay Jagga, who had complained to the Prime Minister’s office in this regard based on which UT had issued the notice, said that, “The condition of providing minimum deposit of Rs 350 in Paytm wallet by Uber, has no sanction of law and rather it is arbitrary and illegal. This is an unfair trade practice as it imposes on the consumers unjustified costs/burden.”“Moreover, withholding the amount is nothing less than exploitation of consumers. Once a passenger is having a deposit of Rs 200, how can Uber refuse a ride of Rs 50 by asking them to add a minimum Rs 150, i.e. maintaining a minimum deposit of Rs 350. By this way Uber is blocking the usage of the deposit, lying with Paytm, whereas it might be earning in terest on it, on people’s money,” he added.Meanwhile, Uber spokesperson said that they needed time to look into the matter and examine it. “It will be difficult to obtain information internally due to a holiday,” the representative said.
