School bags not more than 10% of kids’ weight

CHANDIGARH: After Haryana and Punjab, Chandigarh too has issued a circular to principals of all private and government schools prescribing the weight of school bags for classes I to X.On Tuesday, district education officer officially shared the policy with all private and government schools.

CHANDIGARH: After Haryana and Punjab, Chandigarh too has issued a circular to principals of all private and government schools prescribing the weight of school bags for classes I to X.On Tuesday, district education officer officially shared the policy with all private and government schools. The director, school education, had finalised the policy last week.Though the UT has stuck to the limit prescribed by other states, the circular has mentioned that “under any circumstances, the weight of the school bag should not exceed 10% of the weight of the student.” A Copy of the circular is with TOI.Schools have been advised to use books/study materials prescribed by NCERT/ SCERT and CBSE. Maximisation of digital teaching and learning, wherever viable, has been suggested. Making provisions for lockers for students for keeping their belongings is another suggestion along with use of loose sheets for assignments to reduce weight of the bag. In the circular, the education department has also listed guidelines under three heads — general guidelines, specific guidelines (including prescription of bag weight), and sensitisation of parents and students.The guidelines have been made by the committee constituted by the department under the chairmanship of district education officer in compliance with the directions issued by the government. “In the circular, recommendations have been made for reducing the weight of school bags at the primary, upper primary and high classes,” said B L Sharma, the education secretary.Schools have further been told to avoid use of guides and related materials, which are generally voluminous and costly. “Children should be made to think, imagine and construct their own answers.
