PU stands at number 19 among Indian institutions. Last year, the varsity figured at number 12. However, PU had notched up its performance from rank 130 in 2017 to rank 135 in THE Emerging Economies University Ranking, 2018. Sources said THE has suggested that the University use special assets created to market the university. “We have identified certain areas, including research and industry collaboration, where we need to improve. The strategies have been devised to strengthen these areas,” said Prof Raj Kumar, PU vice-chancellor.However, Prof M Rajivlochan, director of internal quality assurance cell (IQAC), PU, said the University needs to rank itself vis-á-vis the rest of the world and not just a special “crippled set of economies”.“PU needs to continue to strengthen its faculty and research, persuade faculty to interface more with the industry and do translational research.PU also needs to reach out to students much more, increase its catchment area, which has now been overtaken by private universities and the University of Pune,” said Prof Rajivlochan. Among Indian institutions, Indian Institute of Science has got the top rank at number 14, followed by Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai at rank 27. Both these institutes have slipped by one rank from last year. Scaling up its performance, the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee stood at rank 35. Among the Indian universities, Savitribai Phule Pune University is at rank 93 with Banaras Hindu University and Amrita University also making it to the top 150.Performance indicators include teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer). On January 7, TOI reported that the number of sponsored research projects at Panjab University has reduced by more than 50% in the 2017-18 session. Moreover, the number of funding agencies sponsoring these projects has also dropped from 37 in 2016-17 to 10 in the 2017-18 session. Consequently, the amount received by funding projects has decreased from Rs 84 crore to Rs 25 crore in the 2017-18 session. Experts in the university feel this will affect quality of research.Only two patents of the University were published in the 2017-18 session, which shows fact PU needs to improve on the research front and industry collaborations.
