Probe ordered into re-registration of vehicles

In a complaint filed by one Navdeep Puri of Moga district, he has alleged that such practice is prevalent in Patti tehsil of Taran Taran district. Thus, by showing the cost of vehicle less, the authorities were charging less tax which is ultimately causing tax loss to the state government. He has complained that while issuing fresh registration certificates of Punjab to vehicles bought or transferred from other states, the depreciation value is being decided on officials’ whims for monetary consideration. The complainant has submitted that such vehicle registration certificates are being managed by vehicles owners in some cases even by showing fake address proof. Many of such vehicles include luxury cars and SUVs.In such cases, the authorities are not making use of the e-Vahan software launched by the union ministry of road transport and highways and calculate the depreciation value manually.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister’s office on Tuesday ordered an inquiry on a complaint that vehicles registered in other states are being re-registered after sale in some of the tehsils in Tarn Taran, Sangrur and other districts by showing their depreciation value very less which is causing revenue loss to the state exchequer.It is learnt that the chief minister’s office has issued directions to the transport secretary to get details of such vehicles registered in all the districts and submit a report at the earliest.
