BJP-SAD candidate elected Chandigarh mayor

CHANDIGARH: Rajesh Kumar alias Kalia, a candidate of BJP-SAD alliance won the seat of Chandigarh mayor on Friday. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi , BJP national president Amit Shah and BJP's Chandigarh leadership for selecting his name to contest the mayor's election. Out of total 27 votes cast, Rajesh got 16, while his opponent Satish Kumar Kainth, a BJP rebel who contested the mayor seat as an independent councillor, got 11 votes.Earlier, Congress candidate for mayor's post Sheela Phool Singh withdrew her candidature and gave silent support to Kainth.Since Congress has four councillors in 26-member Chandigarh MC and besides Congress, lone independent candidate Daleep Sharma had given open support to Kainth, five votes crossed from BJP in favour of Kainth, which once again showed the internal rift in the Chandigarh BJP.Out of total 27 votes cast for the mayor's seat, 26 are elected councillors, while one vote is of city MP Kirron Kher , who is ex-officio member of the MC's general house.After being elected as mayor, Rajesh Kumar was blessed by city MP Kirron Kher and other BJP senior leaders.
