Call on full fee waiver for transgenders deferred

CHANDIGARH: The syndicate has deferred the decision to grant full fee waiver to its transgender students and asked to remove the condition that those who take part in dharnas are not eligible for a full fee waiver.A syndicate member raised the issue that how can the committee guidelines state that transgender students seeking full fee waiver should not be involved in any dharnas and protest? After the committee had recommended this condition, senate member Chaman Lal had objected to this.Another syndicate member Harpreet Dua raised concern over the condition that total income from all the sources should not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh per year to get the full fee waiver. The guidelines had also stated that students should not be involved in criminal cases. It was then decided by the syndicate to send back the matter to the committee. This will also be included in the recommendations of the committee, sources said.As per the guidelines framed by the committee, an ID card should be submitted showing that the candidate belongs to the transgender category.

He proposed that the condition should be done away with.Sources said that there was a confusion since two committees had been formed to look into the matter, but now one of them has been asked to make all the changes and incorporate the other recommendations by the syndicate members.Syndic Prof Rajesh Gill said a few transgender students had approached her stating that they can neither stay in girls’ hostel nor boys’ hostel, so, they should be allotted a space where all of them can stay together. This will also be included in the recommendations of the committee, sources said.As per the guidelines framed by the committee, an ID card should be submitted showing that the candidate belongs to the transgender category. The guidelines had also stated that students should not be involved in criminal cases.
