Ranjit Singh's plea: Badal, Majithia get notice

The HC had also examined the notification and term of reference of the commission before taking cognizance of Justice Ranjit Singh's plea.Justice Singh, who had retired from the Punjab and Haryana high court, has sought the action against Badal junior and Majithia as per section 10-A of the Commission of Inquiry act. CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday issued notice to the former deputy chief minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal and former minister Bikramjit Majithia on a plea against them for making statements against Justice Ranjit Singh commission that probed the Punjab's sacrilege cases.Both Badal and Majithia has been asked to file their responses to the allegations by March 25.Justice Amit Rawal has issued the notice to Badal and Majithia on hearing a petition filed by Justice Ranjit Singh (retired) seeking criminal action against Badal and Majithia for his statements against the commission headed by him.Justice Rawal has passed these orders after examining the CDs containing video recordings showing Badal making statements against the commission. The section provides for penal action against the acts that bring the commission or any of its members’ disrepute.“If any person, by words either spoken or intended to be read, makes or publishes any statement or does any other act, which is calculated to bring the Commission or any member thereof into disrepute, he shall be punishable with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine, or with both,” says the provisions mentioned in section 10-A of the act.In his petition, Justice Singh has referred two instances where former deputy CM and senior SAD leader, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Majithia had allegedly made statements against the commission and had acted in a manner to disrepute the commission and its head.Rejecting Zora Singh commission report on the sacrilege issue, Captain Amarinder Singh led congress government had constituted a fresh Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) on April 14, 2017, to investigate all cases of sacrilege in Punjab.
