Man held for growing poppy in Ambala village

AMBALA: The Naggal police have booked a resident of village Jandheri for allegedly growing poppy at his property in village Jandheri of the district. Upon counting the plants, a total of 302 poppy plants were recovered from the property and they were uprooted and taken into the custody. The cops received the tip-off about the plantation of poppy at village Jandheri following which a raid was conducted at the spot and 302 fully grown poppy plants were recovered.The accused has been identified as Balbir Singh and has been booked for growing poppy at his property without any permit or license. During the raid, the team found poppy planted at the property. When the accused Balbir was asked to present any permit or license for planting the contraband, he failed to present any relevant document following which he was taken into custody.

The district police also found out that the accused had marked cuts on the buds of the poppy flower to extract fresh opium from the plants.On Wednesday, on the complaint of a police official, a case under Sections 18/61/85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused Balbir at Naggal police station.As per the First Information Report (FIR), the cop stated, “We received the tip-off that the accused Balbir has planted poppy in a hidden manner behind a wall of bricks without any permission at his property in village Jandheri. Acting as per the tip-off, the senior officials were informed and all the relevant due procedures were followed to conduct a raid at the concerned property. During the raid, the team found poppy planted at the property. Upon counting the plants, a total of 302 poppy plants were recovered from the property and they were uprooted and taken into the custody. The total weight of the plants is 8.5 kg. When the accused Balbir was asked to present any permit or license for planting the contraband, he failed to present any relevant document following which he was taken into custody. The accused had also marked cuts on the flower buds of poppy to extract opium from them.”DSP Headquarter Ambala Sultan Singh said, “I visited the spot along with the teams and recovered 302 poppy plants weighing 8.5 kg from the property of the accused Balbir who was arrested on Wednesday in the night and on Thursday he was presented before the court which has sent him to judicial custody for 14-days. After registering a case under relevant law further investigation is being done.”
