Punjab: Former Rajpura MLA Balwant Singh passes away

PATIALA: Former Rajpura MLA professor Balwant Singh passed away at a hospital in Chandigarh following prolonged illness. "Professor Balwant Singh was the leader of masses since he foreyed into politics after resigning from his job. He remained active in party activities and helped in formation of trade unions in Rajpura. He was also appointed as state secretary of CPI(M) in 1998 up till 2008. He was always active among the trade unions and used to raise their issues with the governments," CPI(M) district president Dharampal Singh said.Professor Balwant Singh had shifted his base to Chandigarh after he was appointed as state secretary by the party.

PATIALA: Former Rajpura MLA professor Balwant Singh passed away at a hospital in Chandigarh following prolonged illness. He was 82.Balwant, who hailed from Hashimpur village of Rajpura division in Patiala, joined politics after resigning from his government job as a school teacher in 1968. He remained active in party activities and helped in formation of trade unions in Rajpura. Later, he chose to contest elections and won from Rajpura assembly seat on CPI(M) ticket and served as a legislator from 1980 to 1985.In 1988, he became the state president of CITU. He was also appointed as state secretary of CPI(M) in 1998 up till 2008."Professor Balwant Singh was the leader of masses since he foreyed into politics after resigning from his job. He was always active among the trade unions and used to raise their issues with the governments," CPI(M) district president Dharampal Singh said.Professor Balwant Singh had shifted his base to Chandigarh after he was appointed as state secretary by the party. His cremation will take place on March 24 in Chandigarh.
