CHANDIGARH: National Green Tribunal has asked the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) and municipal corporation (MC) to improve solid waste management in a hearing held on Tuesday. Tribunal expressed displeasure at the existing status of solid waste management in the city.TC Nautiyal, member secretary, CPCC, said: " NGT was of the view that Chandigarh should be a role model when it comes to solid waste management. It want us to start the garbage segregation and manage the discharge of waste water in the city. The fact is that, JP company, which was supposed to get its automatic material recovery facility for waste segregation ready by December last year, has not been able to meet the deadline. Now, the MC has given word to ensure its completion by June this year. For this, four-acre land has been identified in Dadumajra. In this facility, plastic will be converted into briquettes for industry use."According to Nautiyal, NGT has already given direction to some specific industries, including cement, to use only refused derived fuel, such as the one from plastic briquettes, in their operation.According to the information submitted to NGT by CPCC, with regard to discharge of waste water from various outlets in Sukhna Choe, sewage continues to be discharged from Kishangarh outlet. For the time being, a short-term measure has been submitted to fit the waste water and connect it with sewerage line. A new solid waste treatment plant (STP) will be set up by November 2022. The outlet of village Kishanagarh inside forest nursery too continues to discharge sewage water and there is no plan to stop it either .Leakages in the first outlet of Bapu Dham on the road connecting IT park with Sector 26 has been plugged. Same is the case for second outlet of Bapu Dham Colony, also known as Madrasi Colony. Nevertheless, sewage water is being discharged from both the colonies without any treatment. The MC has plugged the discharge points in the outlet from back of a gaushala and outlet near CTU workshop, both in Industrial Area Phase 1. There had been substantial sewage discharge from these sites. The sewage is being discharged from many outlets from Industrial Area Phase I and Colony Number 4. In this case, waste water has already been tapped and diverted to sewer line. When pump in the pump house behind central Poultry Development Organisation in Industrial Area Phase I, operated by the MC, was not working, waste water was directly going into Sukhna Choe on regular basis. According to the MC officials, the problem with pump has been resolved, therefore, dirty water is not being let into Sukhna Choe any more.In Hallomajra, nearly 70% households have been connected to sewerline. The MC has assured to connect all shortly. In village Daria too, excess sewage of unauthorised colony has been tapped, so now there is no discharge.Of the two outlets in N-Choe, which were discharging waste water in Leisure Valley, one has been plugged. Similarly, near Red Cross in Madhya Marg, near BD Hosptial in Sector 23, Bal Bhawan side and Sector 51 outlets have been plugged. But, no action has been taken near Beant Memorial, which faces water logging. Also, four outlets in Sector 52 are discharging sewage water but here too no action has been taken so far.
