Rs 9.6 crore hawala money seized off Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: A day after the detention of six persons, including a Jalandhar priest who is said to be an aide of Kerala nun rape accused Franco Mulakkal , Khanna cops said on Saturday that more than Rs 9.66 crore hawala money was recovered from the three vehicles they were travelling in. On flagging down the cars, the occupants of the EcoSport identified themselves as Anthony and Rachpal, that of the Innova as Ravinder Lingayat, his wife Shivangi and Ashok Kumar and that of the Brezza as Harpal Singh,” the SSP said. A search of the cars led to seizure of Rs 9.67 crore.Police said the people detained, vehicles and the currency haul have been handed over to income tax officers Vimal Madan and Varinder Kumar and Deepak Rajpoot, assistant director enforcement, Jalandhar, for further investigation.Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ludhiana Range, Ranbir Singh Khatra told TOI that the money recovered was of different denominations.Even as a senior police officer had said on Friday that Fr Anthony was detained from his house in Partappura, Khanna police on Saturday claimed that the six persons were held from near Doraha while travelling in three vehicles. According to police sources, income-tax officials again searched the house of Father Anthony at Partappura village and in Mumbai.The accused are Father Anthony, a priest in a church at Partappura village, Rachpal Singh of Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran, Ravinder Lingayat of Derabali Panvil, New Mumbai, his wife Shivangi Lingayat, Ashok Kumar of Gawabhi in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh and Harpal Singh of Jalandhar.SSP Khanna Dhruv Dahiya told media persons that ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Khanna police had begun intensive checking, increased highway patrolling and also set up a special mobile-check post on the highway.He added that police teams were searching vehicles and persons at the mobile-check post opposite McDonald outlet at Doraha on Friday when they got a tip-off that a group running a counterfeit and hawala racket was travelling from Jalandhar to Ambala in three cars with a huge amount of illegal currency.“Following this, Inspector Karnail Singh, SHO Doraha and ASI Mohinderpal Singh began searching all vehicles approaching from Jalandhar-Ludhiana side.
