During a drive, a team of the District Health Department inspected residential units in Jagtar Nagar, Bajwa Colony, Aman Nagar, Gurdarshan Nagar, Tripuri, Anand Nagar and Rishi Colony besides various government offices in the district. During checking, dengue larvae were found in desert coolers at ten houses. Following this, Municipal Corporation officials issued challan to the residents of these houses. The team also issued a challan to the office of the District Education Officer (Primary) after dengue larvae were found on the office complex. Earlier, the anti-dengue drive of the Health Department was marred by lack of support from the civic body. However, after facing a flak from the district administration, the MC today issued challans on recommendation of health officials. Until now, dengue larvae have been found at 727 places, but only 11 challans have been issued in this regard. District epidemiologist Dr Sumeet said despite an aggressive awareness dengue drive, residents have not been supportive. He said if people feign ignorance, the Health Department had no choice but to penalise them. Civil Surgeon Harish Malhotra said the anti-dengue drive would continue through the season. He said high-risk areas were being kept under surveillance and awareness activities were being carried out there. Malhotra appealed to the people to cooperate with the department and observe Friday as ‘dry day’, when they have to drain water from their coolers, as a preventive measure against the vector-borne disease.
