Nitish Sharma Ambala, June 26 Leaders of the Congress and the INLD from the Ambala Cantonment have criticised the BJP for its decision to constitute separate civic bodies for the twin towns of Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment. Leaders of both the parties said, “For the first time the status of the Municipal Corporation has been degraded by any government in the state.” “It is a wrong decision taken by the state government. If people are suffering than it is due to the failure of the Haryana government, which has not provided adequate staff. A case in this regard is still pending in the High Court. We will talk to legal experts and challenge the government’s decision,” said Chitra Sarwara, All India Mahila Congress general secretary and former councillor from Ward No.16. “Now files for every project will go to Chandigarh. It will slow down the pace of development. Budgets will also get reduced,” she added. A decision to this effect was taken at the Haryana Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in Chandigarh on Tuesday. According to the decision, Ambala City will retain the present Municipal Corporation (MC) with the inclusion of 12 adjoining villages while the new Municipal Council will come up for Ambala Sadar with the exclusion of Sadar Zone from the existing MC. “It is totally a politically motivated decision and the BJP will pay the price in the upcoming elections. It seems there is a one man show going on in the government. Earlier, the commissionerate system was abolished, which was completely wrong. Now, the MC has been disbanded,” said Onkar Singh, INLD leader. Meanwhile, Health Minister and local MLA Anil Vij said the Hooda-led Congress government in the state had wrongly given the status of Municipal Corporation despite the fact that it didn’t fulfil conditions for it. Residents of Ambala Cantonment had to travel to Ambala City to get their work done as MC officials used to sit there, he said. Moreover, money earned from the Ambala Cantonment was being spent in Ambala City, he added.
