Kids in a fix as new building yet to open

Shifting of the students studying in Government High School, Colony No. 4, to another school in Maloya has become a cause of worry for the parents as the school building will soon be razed. 4 school all the way from Maloya if there is a delay in the opening of the new school building? In order to be shifted to a new school building, the Engineering Department will have to hand over the school to the Education Department and get the school inaugurated. 4 have also enrolled their children in Government High School, Colony No 4.

With Colony No. 4, Government High School will also be demolished soon Naina Mishra Chandigarh, July 15 While the UT Administration has given the Colony No. 4 residents July 21 deadline to vacate the land, the plan to shift students to a new school building in Maloya, which is yet to be inaugurated, hangs fire. Shifting of the students studying in Government High School, Colony No. 4, to another school in Maloya has become a cause of worry for the parents as the school building will soon be razed. The school currently accommodates around 1,800 students in double shifts. Since the slum dwellers of Colony No 4 have been allotted flats in Maloya under a slum rehabilitation scheme, the students are ought to be shifted to a newly constructed government school building in Maloya. The colony has more than 5,000 houses, which will be demolished after the deadline. In the absence of any timeline as to when the students will be shifted to the new school building, parents have found themselves in a tizzy as the distance between Colony No. 4 and Maloya is approximately 30 minutes. Santosh Giri, a rehri owner at Colony No. 4 said, “We have to shift to Maloya within a week. How will I take my kids to Colony No. 4 school all the way from Maloya if there is a delay in the opening of the new school building? It is mid-session already and students’ studies are bound to suffer as exams are approaching.” Giri’s daughter Priya, who studies in Class VII, said, “We have been told that we will be shifted to a new school building in Maloya, but when we ask our class teacher about when it is going to happen, she has no answers.” Another parent said, “My two children study in Mani Majra Town School. We are wondering whether we will get transport facility from Maloya to the school.” Rubinderjit Singh Brar, Director, School Education, said the Education Department is in active consultation with the Engineering Department regarding the issue. Of the two new school buildings in Maloya, one is ready, while the other is nearing completion. In order to be shifted to a new school building, the Engineering Department will have to hand over the school to the Education Department and get the school inaugurated. UT Chief Engineer Mukesh Anand said, “The building is ready and there is no problem in shifting students. We will communicate the same to the Education Department.” Some non-residents of Colony No. 4 have also enrolled their children in Government High School, Colony No 4. As per the RTE Act, the minimum distance should be 1 km walking distance from the habitation of a child at the primary level (Classes I to V) and within 3km walking distance for upper primary level (Classes VI to VIII). An official of UT Estate office, “This issue is under our purview and we will most likely accommodate these students in other government schools.”
