Construction of Chhoti Nadi overbridge stands stalled

Preneet Kaur inaugurated the work of widening of road at the Sanauri Adda, along with the development of a new rehri market, parking space and a park in area of ward 40-41 in January, at a total cost of Rs 3.75 crore to bring respite to the residents from traffic jams. “The overbridge will be widened at an expenditure of Rs 1.75 crore. With its widening, residents of Sanaur, Bunereri, Devigarh, Pehova, Cheeka will be able to travel to the city from the bridge with ease,” officials had said. Six months on, the work has not even reached halfway. The construction was started in early February. Sand was thrown onto the Chhoti Nadi to make a temporary path for residents of Sanaur, Bunereri, Devigarh and other nearby areas to commute to the city while work continued on the sidelines. A JCB machine now stands immobile while the dug-up land has been filled with rain water. The route has become a slippery slope for commuters who used to commute from the temporary path as they are forced to traverse from the Bari Nadi side. Buses meant for Sanaur, Bunereri, Devigarh, Pehova, Cheeka also have to commute from the Bari Nadi side while residents say the matter has only worsened. Ghansham, a worker at a nearby shop said, “The work of construction of the over-bridge has been stopped for some time now. The people are also continuously threatened of falling in the mud.” Kulbir, a rickshaw-puller said, “Rather than being a boon, the abandoned construction work has only made matters worse for residents on the other side. The contractor has simply abandoned the work.” Officials of the Municipal Corporation (MC) were not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
